Anthony Petrello | Oil Industry Executive And Philanthropist

Anthony “Tony” Petrello is a powerful executive in the gas and oil industry. He is also a well-recognized philanthropist in Houston, Texas. Presently, he is the Board President and Chief Executive Officer of Nabors Industries Ltd.

Early Career

Tony is a Newark, New Jersey, native. He attended Yale University for both his Masters and Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics. He also has a doctorate from Harvard Law School. In 1979, after his university studies, Tony started working at a New York-based law firm called Baker & McKenzie. He specialized in international arbitration, corporate law, and taxation. In 1986, he became a managing partner at the law firm until he left in 1991.

Career at Nabors Industries

Tony Petrello joined Nabors Industries Ltd in 1991 and was elected to its Executive Committee and Board of Directors. He served as the company’s president and COO from 1991 to 2011. In 2003, he was elected the Deputy Chairman of the board. Later in 2011, he became the President and CEO of the company. In 2012, he became the chairman of the board and its executive committee.

Apart from his operating functions at Nabors, Petrello also provides strategic planning direction and initiative. This enables Nabors to adapt to the dynamic competitive market. Since he took over as Nabors’ CEO, the company’s share price has increased by 180 percent.

Nabors Industries Ltd is one of the biggest contract oil drillers in the world. It runs 500 oil rigs located in 25 countries. Today, Nabors is one of the most profitable businesses in the world. Some of the services that the company provides include directional drilling, offshore drilling, high-performance tools, and innovative technologies.


Tony Petrello and his wife, Cynthia Petrello, have a daughter called Carena who has Periventricular Leukomalacia (PLV). This neurological disease is acquired at birth and attacks premature infants. It is caused by the reduced flow of blood to the brain. After her premature birth, Carena later developed cerebral palsy. She has impaired motor skills, developmental delays, and will depend on someone else for the rest of her life.

This condition has made the Petrello’s devote their resources and time to finding answers and possibly a cure for their daughter and other people suffering from the disease. So far, the Petrello’s have donated almost seven million dollars to Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute. Today, Petrello is a member of Texas children’s Hospital’s board of trustees.
